Why is it important?

Being prepared when applying for a mortgage can help you manage the process as smoothly as possible.

So, you've found your dream home. Congrats! Now you need to make a formal application. Sometimes this phase can feel overwhelming, so we’ve broken down some things you should expect when applying for a mortgage.

Here’s what to expect

  1. Expect to make a decision on your mortgage

It’s time to decide which mortgage is right for you. Whatever your decision, make sure you fully understand the mortgage terms. You might want to talk through your options with a mortgage advisor or broker.

  2. Expect to attend appointments

You should book an appointment with your lender to discuss your application. You’ll usually have the option of a face-to-face appointment or a phone call.

  3. Expect to undergo a credit check

Lenders will carry out a check of your credit history to decide whether to accept your mortgage application.

  4. Expect a lot of paperwork

When you apply for your mortgage, you’ll be asked for several documents, and will have to fill out lots of forms. Get your pay slips, utility bills and proof of identification ready.

  5. Expect to get your finances in order

Your lender may ask for proof of your deposit. And you’ll also need to make sure you have enough money for other expenses, like a solicitor and a surveyor.

  6. Expect regular communications

You will receive paperwork and communication from your lender to move your application to an offer. Remember to respond to these correctly and efficiently.
