Protecting our planet
Committed to actively shaping the future.
How we’re protecting our planet
-
Nature and innovation
We take responsibility for our emissions, focusing on permanent carbon removal.
-
Reducing our emissions
We reduced our carbon emissions by 2700 tonnes CO2e in 2023.
-
£20 million Green Fund
We support developers to build affordable and energy-efficient homes.
-
Using renewables
We’ve switched to using renewable electricity and green gas.
We care about our impact on today’s and tomorrow’s world. So, we won’t stand by and wait for someone else to fix the problem. We’re the kind of people who roll up our sleeves and get stuck in to make meaningful and measurable impact where we can, and learning as we go.
We’ve pledged to achieve net zero by 2040 (excluding our mortgage book), with at least 50% carbon reduction by 2030.
So here’s how we’re running our business with integrity, making environmental sustainability more than a tick-box exercise, and doing our bit to make the world a better place to live.
Taking action
We constantly review what we can do differently, or better:
Conserving energy
- Our office uses energy efficient lighting, heating, ventilation, and power.
- Our branches use low energy LED lighting and motion sensors.
- All diesel vehicles in our fleet will be replaced by the end of 2024.
Slashing waste
- We monitor and reduce what we print at our office and branches.
- We’re working hard behind the scenes to reduce the amount of paper we send to our customers.
- Non-recyclable waste is converted to energy wherever possible.
- We’re replacing PCs and laptops with more energy efficient devices.
- We recycle or donate our old equipment.
Learning and sharing
- We’re all carbon awareness trained, so making climate smart choices is second nature.
- Our colleague-run Planet Friendly Network shares advice on how to lead a lower carbon lifestyle.
- We have a dedicated Impact team and ‘Sustainability by Design’ is embedded in our business thinking.
Forging purposeful partnerships
- We work with ClimatePartner to gather data, measure our carbon footprint and take responsibility for our emissions.
- We work with Hellios to reduce the environmental impact of our supply chain partners.
- We work with UNDO on supporting permanent, real-world carbon removal solutions, like enhanced rock weathering.
- We work with sustainable developers to actively fund the development of low carbon housing.

So, how are we doing?
We're committed to being open and transparent about our sustainability journey. We make sure we measure our progress and share our results openly.
